SEI had a strong presence at the Immersive Technologies (IM-TECH) in Training and Education Conference at George Mason University (GMU) on September 12. The conference featured expert speakers, including SEI Boston principal and GMU adjunct faculty member Patty Gilbert McDonald, Ph.D., and national practice lead for AI and technology, Antonio Mañueco. The event included technology demonstrations and a debate on the future of AI adoption.
“It was inspiring to witness leaders from academia, government, and industry discussing the impact of Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Extended Reality (XR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) on workforce training,” states Patty. “It was also meaningful to me personally as I was able to bring my SEI colleagues together with my former GMU mentors and students from the Learning Design and Technology Program at the Graduate School of Education.”
Patty moderated a panel titled “Exploring the Future: Generative AI in AR/VR for Industry Applications,” which featured Antonio alongside Douglas Fajardo of Xennial, Shane Parreco of Aktïga, and Nathan Carr of Adobe. Apple engineers and account executives were also present to support the panel discussion and engage with participants throughout the event.
The panel explored how the adoption of immersive technologies will impact businesses and workforces, how industries, academic institutions, and government can collaborate to drive technology adoption, and the notable challenges and successes experienced in the uptake of immersive technologies to date.
During the panel discussion, Antonio drew a round of applause for his comments on AI ethics.
“We have an ethical responsibility to minimize the impact of sticky products in our communities,” he said. “We must leverage technology for good, while taking care to think through the long-lasting effects of addicting products for future generations.”
