IAPP & SEI Event Recap: Scaling Responsible AI with Purpose

Jun 18, 2025   |   By Brian O’Mara, Grace Llojaj and Jeremy Yanowitz

Earlier this month, SEI had the pleasure of co-hosting a timely and well-attended event with the IAPP’s KnowledgeNet DC Chapter: Building for the Future: Expert Panel on Operationalizing AI Governance and Scaling Responsible AI.

Held on SEI’s rooftop—set against sunlit views of downtown Washington, D.C.—the evening brought together a vibrant mix of data privacy professionals, AI enthusiasts, and folks who simply couldn’t pass up a thoughtful conversation on a perfect June night.

Tackling AI Governance from All Angles

The panel, moderated by SEI’s Grace Czechowski Llojaj, featured standout insights from Katie Abendroth (SEI), LaTonya E. Clark (Fannie Mae), and Mark Smith (CIPL). Together, they tackled some of the thorniest challenges in AI governance, including:

  • Managing shadow AI
  • Aligning risk frameworks across business units
  • Building trust in emerging technologies
  • Driving adoption through smart change management

Each panelist brought a practical, experienced lens—grounded in cybersecurity, enablement, and accountability. One audience takeaway summed it up well: “Bring your change team with you.”

If you’re building anything AI-related, collaboration and culture are as important as compliance.

Responsible AI in Action

The event reflected SEI’s ongoing commitment to shaping how businesses navigate the promise and pressure of emerging technologies. Our consultants don’t just guide clients through compliance and risk, they help design and deliver frameworks that make innovation sustainable, scalable, and secure.

Grateful for a Night of Insight

Big thanks to IAPP and the volunteers who helped make it happen—and to everyone who joined us. The questions were sharp, the networking even sharper, and the SEI team was proud to help spark these conversations that will shape what responsible AI looks like in practice.

Here’s to more shared learning, stronger partnerships, and more evenings – on the DC rooftop and beyond.
